The History of Denia Castle

Period of Islamic Influence

Originating in the 10th and 11th centuries, this fortress was initially a domain under Islamic rule. It showcased a prominent double fortification comprising both a citadel and a secure refuge known as the albacar.

Significant strengthening of the structure was evident during the late 12th century, as deduced from architectural findings. Noteworthy elements included the Mid Tower, with its distinguished double arches and ornamental frames, and the Town Gate, a main access point marked by pointed arches and a distinctive wedge.

Christian Reconquest Transition

Once King James I conquered DĂ©nia in 1244, the purpose of the castle’s spaces transformed. The lower albacar evolved into DĂ©nia’s town area by 1308, while the elevated citadel retained a defensive role, housing structures such as the Old Palace.

By around 1600, the citadel was further fortified with the integration of a Renaissance palace commissioned by Francisco GĂłmez Sandoval y Rojas, which has come to be the present location of the local Archaeological Museum.

The necessity for added defense against Berber pirate raids led to significant 16th-century fortifications, establishing the castle as a quintessential example of Renaissance military architecture.

Post-Medieval Developments

Wartime events such as the War of Succession and French invasion in 1812 left the castle and its surroundings ravaged. Entering the 19th century, the castle transitioned into private ownership, finding a new incarnation as an agricultural estate, most notably for grape cultivation and raisin production, which introduced new agricultural terraces and supporting walls.

Twentieth Century to Present

Early 20th-century exploitation saw the northern face of the castle being mined for stone. The mid-20th century marked a significant change when the castle came under municipal control in 1947. Efforts to restore and improve the castle began, with actions such as tree planting, improved access, and repairs to key structures like the Consell Tower and Town Gate. The 60s and 70s infrastructure projects for tourism inadvertently led to the destruction of some of the castle’s ancient walls and heritage.

Restoration continued into the 1980s with attention to the Governor’s Palace and the conservation of towers and bastion walls. The 21st century saw the administration further develop the site, opening new spaces such as a conference hall and a visitor center. The recent renovation of the castle’s eastern bastion and Verger Alt — mid-16th-century Renaissance military structures—has newly opened them for public exhibit, enhancing visitor access to the citadel.

The Denia Castle Tunnel

Your journey through DĂ©nia wouldn’t be complete without traversing the Castle Tunnel. The passage runs from Plaza del Consell to Ronda de las Murallas. Thanks to restoration efforts in 2011, the tunnel boasts improved condition and aesthetics.

The tunnel’s origins tie to the Spanish Civil War, serving as a bomb shelter between 1937 and 1938. It provided safety to citizens during air raids. Today, the tunnel persists as a thoroughfare, merging distinct sections of the city.
