Fonts de l’Algar Waterfalls – A Guide to Costa Blanca’s Natural Pools

By Dan

Located near Callosa d’en Sarrià in the picturesque hinterland of Alicante province, the Fonts de L’Algar, or Algar waterfalls, is a natural haven as far removed from the hustle and bustle of Costa Blanca’s coastal resorts as one could possibly imagine. The area has been declared a Protected Water Area since 2002, underscoring its ecological significance.

The River Algar provides the source for these crystal-clear waters, and the surrounding countryside paints the perfect backdrop for the glistening waterfalls and natural pools.

In short, if you are looking for an alternative that offers a short break away from playing on the beach or lounging around the pool, then a day trip to Les Fonts d’Algar is something you really don’t want to miss out on.

What do the Fonts De l’Algar Waterfalls Offer that Coastal Resorts Don’t?

The Costa Blanca is home to many extremely popular coastal holiday resorts but sometimes a change of pace and location is needed just to help you recharge your batteries! The Fonts de L’Algar waterfalls provide that much needed break to thousands of visitors every year.

An appealing change in location and routine, a visit to the Algar waterfalls is a refreshing and invigorating experience. The vast majority of its waterside areas are shaded and the cooler air created by the flow of the water provides a welcome escape from the often extremely hot summer temperatures along the coast and elsewhere in the region.

Although the Algar waterfalls is a great place to visit to walk around, chill, or have a picnic, most visitors will invariably decide to take a dip, why wouldn’t they? However, word of warning, you should be prepared for the water temperature! Even on the hottest of days the water is very, very cold! I guarantee you that the first time you venture into the water it will definitely take your breath away, and that’s why I wrote invigorating earlier!

When you eventually get used to the water temperature, and you will, you’ll start to realize you are standing on rough shingle and lots of uneven stone.

Water shoes are an absolute necessity!

If there is one piece of advice you take away with you after reading this post it is this; Buy some water shoes before visiting if you intend to go swimming they will definitely make your visit much more enjoyable.

I remember the first time I visited the waterfalls and the fact I didn’t have any water shoes was not lost on me, it was extremely uncomfortable every time I went in the water!

How to get to Les Fonts de l’Algar Waterfalls

The Fonts de L’Algar is about 20km from the major holiday city of Benidorm and 3km from Callosa d’En Sarrià; the nearest town. Here are some directions to the waterfalls by car:

If you are driving from Benidorm there are two routes. The shortest route is to take the CV70 then the CV715 towards Callosa d’En Sarrià once in Callosa follow the road signs to Les Fonts de l’Algar.

The alternative route means taking the AP7 turning off at exit 64 and following the CV755 to Callosa.

Taking the AP7 from Benidorm, or any other town south of the waterfalls, Villajoyosa, Alicante etc, is the longer route but takes considerably less time, ESPECIALLY during the busier times of the day, which just happen to be the same times Les Fonts de l’Algar is open!

My advice, use the AP7!

Again, follow the signs to Les Fonts de l’Algar waterfalls once in Callosa. If you are travelling from the north of the Fonts Algar such as Calpe, Moraira, Javea or Denia, then take the AP7 and exit at 64 and follow the directions as written above.

If you are holidaying in the Orba or Jalón Valley then there is a very scenic route that takes you over the Coll de Rates. However, if driving over the top of a mountain via a steep road with hairpin turns doesn’t rock your boat then this might not be the route for you. Scenically though, you can’t beat it, especially coming down the south side of the mountain. Beautiful!

Your visit to Fonts de L’Algar presents an opportunity to explore the rich tapestry of local flora and fauna while indulging in leisurely activities.

The well-marked paths guide you along a 1.5 km trail, allowing for an intimate encounter with the region’s natural beauty.

Whether you seek tranquillity or the thrill of discovery, this corner of the Alicante region serves as the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable experience with nature.
