Visit Playa Del Postiguet, the Urban Beach In The Shadow Of A Castle

Playa del Postiguet, the urban beach in Alicante, is located at the heart of the city and lies in the shadow of the historical Santa Bárbara Castle.

Thanks to its prime location in the heart of Alicante, Playa de Postiguet, has always been a favourite place to chill and relax among locals and visitors alike.

Postiguet Beach sits just along from the famous Explanada. Allowing you to explore Alicante’s attractions and amenities easily. It isn’t as big as the the Benidorm or Calpe beaches but it is adequate for a city the size of Alicante. At just shy of a kilometre in length and 50 meters deep, it provides more than enough space for a whole range of activities.

Where is Postiguet Beach and How to Get There?

You’ll find Postiguet Beach just below Mount Benacantil and Santa Barbara Castle, situated only 1.5 km away from the city centre. So if you’re already in Alicante, getting to the beach is a breeze. You can choose to take a leisurely walk, as it’s not far from the city centre. Alternatively, you can opt for public transport.

The city has a well-established network of buses and trams. Simply hop on either, and it will be just a short ride.

For those coming from outside Alicante, the city is easily accessible by car. Just follow the signs towards Alicante city centre and then look out for the signs directing you to Postiguet Beach. I have also published a handy Alicante Travel Guide that provides more information about the city and its attractions.

Parking near the beach is generally available, but it can get busy during peak season. It’s a good idea to arrive early to secure a spot. If you prefer not to drive, taxis are always an option and are readily available.

Is Postiguet a Safe Beach?

Postiguet Beach is well-known for its beautiful golden sands and clear waters, but it’s also recognized for its safety features.

It has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag certification for its high water quality and excellent environmental management. This certification is an assurance that the beach is well-maintained and adheres to strict safety standards.

So, when you’re taking a plunge in the waters, or just want to sunbathe, you can rest assured that it is a clean and secure environment in which to do so. Showers are also provided on the beach. These make it convenient for you to rinse off the sand and salty water before heading back to your accommodation.

However, it’s important to be aware of some issues that may concern you as a visitor.

The price of hiring sun beds and parasols is quite high, especially when compared to prices on other beaches on the Costa Blanca. You might want to bring a towel or chair of your own if you’re not willing to pay for one. Summer 2023 prices were €20 per sun bed and €7 for a parasol; that is not cheap!

As with other popular tourist spots, there could be handbag thieves lurking around. You would be wise to take precautions. Do not leave your belongings unattended and avoid showing off valuable items in public.

While security is generally pretty good at Playa del Postiguet, it’s always better to stay vigilant and practice safety measures.

Playa Del Postiguet on the Fiesta De San Juan

Every year, on June 23rd, the Spanish celebrate San Juan. Traditionally, Spaniards would build and burn bonfires on the beach to symbolize cleansing and renewal, bringing people together to welcome the summer season.

On the Playa del Postiguet, the atmosphere is electric, with the beach transforming into a lively hub of activity as locals and tourists gather to partake in various festivities, surrounded by the warm glow of bonfires along the length of the beach.

As you stroll along the beach, you can expect to hear lively music, with performances that offer something for everyone. From contemporary beats to traditional Spanish tunes, the different acts set the mood for the energetic festivities.

The Fiesta de San Juan in Alicante is a remarkable celebration that combines tradition, music, dance, and an exhilarating atmosphere. Whether it’s your first time or a yearly tradition, joining the festivities on the Playa del Postiguet, the iconic Alicante beach, is an absolute must.
