I have personally been to la fallas in Dénia on numerous occasions and have always been very impressed with the huge papier-mâché and wood sculptures, the effort and skill that go into make them is phenomenal! 2024’s offerings did not fail to impress!
In the days leading up to the main event, there are a number of other festivities. These range from the offering of flowers to the patron saint, to the thunderous daily mascletàs that fill the air with rhythmic explosions, but be warned, buy some earplugs! I’m not joking, although exciting to watch, these street ‘firecrackers’ can do some serious damage to your hearing!
The fallas themselves are a sight to behold, each one a testament to the euphoric spirit of the community that made it. The festival culminates in the climactic act known as the ‘Cremà’, where these sculptures are set on fire, symbolizing renewal and the welcoming of spring. I have to admit, it does seem a waste of time and effort cremating these works of art, but it is a tradition and besides, it is always spectacular seeing them go up in flames.

During the Fallas, one of the most beautiful and emotive events is the Ofrenda de Flores to the Virgin of the Forsaken, the patron saint of Valencia. On the 17th and 18th of March, we witness a procession through the streets that converges upon the Basilica of the Virgin in Dénia, where falleros and falleras offer bouquets. These flowers are artfully arranged to form a stunning tapestry adorning the image of the Virgin, symbolizing devotion and communal unity.

The entrega de premios (presentation of awards) is a highly anticipated part of the festivities. We partake in the excitement as various Fallasa commissions compete for recognition in multiple categories, celebrating the creativity and hard work that goes into the monuments. On the day of the awards, the atmosphere fills with anticipation, leading to the pregón, the public proclamation where winners revel in the honor and praise – the pleitesías – of their peers and the public.

Accommodation in and Access to Denia During Las Fallas
Hotels often reach full capacity during the festivities so booking well in advance is advisable.
Be warned that if you are going to drive into Denia for specific events during las fallas, access into and out of the town can be very slow especially within an hour or two of any main events taking place, and parking is definitely at a premium too.
Plan to arrive earlier for a less stressful event or possibly park in nearby La Xara or Teulada and catch the coastal tram into the town.
